How to Write a Friendly Letter: Keeping in Touch with Distant Friends

With instant messaging and social media, many do not bother learning about letter writing. But a friendly letter between friends can do a lot to strengthen bonds, catch up, and express your feelings in a personal way. Seeing this letter on their door can be a pleasant surprise to your friends, especially if you follow our tips on creating a friendly letter.

1, Start with a Warm Greeting

Start-with-a-Warm-Greeting

Start on the right foot by giving a friendly greeting, especially if you haven’t seen this person in a while. Nothing breaks the ice better in a friendly letter than something like “Dear [Name]” or “How have you been.” This can make the greeting feel natural and help engage them in talking with you. Just make sure it feels natural and reflects on your relationship with them.

2, Share Personal Updates and Ask About Them

Once you’ve introduced them and broken the ice, you can start by talking about all the things that have happened to you since you last spoke. Let them know of any major events both good and bad so that you can have something to talk about and hear their thoughts on the matter. Just remember that they also have their own life and be sure to ask them about what’s happening to them. It won’t be a friendly letter if you only talk about yourself.

3, Include Inside Jokes

Aside from personal updates, sharing some inside jokes and experiences is a great way to get a laugh out of them and fill your friend with a farm, fuzzy feeling. They are also a reminder that you were listening to them in previous conversations and help put them at ease if you haven’t been there in a while.

4, Keep the Tone Light and Positive

A friendly letter is meant to uplift and strengthen the connection between friends. Keep the tone light, positive, and friendly throughout. Even if you’re discussing challenges or difficulties, try to maintain an optimistic outlook to keep the letter warm and inviting.

5, End on a Kind Note

When you’ve said everything you want to say, conclude with some kind words to make it a friendly letter. Say things like “Take care” or “Warm regards” but also don’t be discouraged from suggesting you meet up or write again soon. This shows that you still want to hear from them.

Aside from writing a friendly letter, another important lesson to create positive letters is creating thank you letters.
