May 3rd, 1918 Dear Madeline, As the Kaiser and the Jerrys retreat further into the Argonne, I am confronted with more time to think. To think of the marvelous times we’ve had throughout the years, whether it be our voyage on the Titanic back in 12, or that time we accidentally plotted the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. And although I am scared of what may happen in this war, nothing scares me more than missing your graduation. Although my body is in France fighting the Germans, and my mind is elsewhere wondering why I’m fighting in a war that ended
over a hundred years ago, my soul is at home, with you, ma and pa. I’m proud of you Maddie. Love, Evan Alzamora, 9th Infantry Division, MVP of the War.
