My dearest wife, As you know, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla has been captured. The others and I are devastated and worried now that he has been executed. We feel hopeless. I pray that you are still doing well and taking care of everything at home. Again, I apologize for leaving so suddenly, but after hearing hidalgo announce his Grito de Dolores on September 16, I knew I had to leave to fight for not only Mexico, but you. Although time with him was short, Hidalgo and the armed force of native and mestizo peasants managed to attack a few spanish
powered villagges. It's not enough to gain our independence and we hope a new leader rises to achieve our freedom. I'm writing to you to inform you about what the other peasants have been hearing. Apparently a man named Father José María Morelos y Pavón is rumored to be the new leader of the independence movement. Everything is moving so quickly, so here is my attempt to give you as much information as possible without making this letter ages long: Morelos is a military man and wants independence for fair schooling system, the abolishment of slavery and for Mexico to
be considered Americans. To me, he sounds like a relatively good leader considering his motives, right? Think about it, if our children were to grow up in the state Mexico is in right now, all they would know is the Spanish controlling us and wouldn’t get the opportunity of freedom. Not to mention our poor economy because of the poor harvest we have been facing. The American and French revolutions are definitely inspiring a lot of the work that is being done and I hope our outcome is similar to theirs. Although my worries stand still about fighting against one
of the strongest militaries in the world, I cannot cover up my excitement about idignous people of Mexico finally fighting for what we believe in. Our hope for the future is that if the Spaniards were to attack, our location and geographical advantages would throw them off as they might not know how to attack the Mexican army. Also, thinking of Spain's problems, they are behind politically and economically compared to other nations in Europe and had that whole issue with Napoleon replacing their king and such. Alright, I think that's enough information for one letter, I miss you dearly
and hope to see you soon. Wish me and the fellow idnigous people luck with everything, hopefully Morales will continue this movement. Much Love, Your dear husband
