dearest mother today is the first time that they have permitted us to compose letters
Dearest Mother,
Today is the first time that they have permitted us to compose letters since this awful battle started and I have no uncertainty you are on edge to get with me. I figured I ought to write to tell you I'm safe. I miss you and the rest, give everybody an embrace from me and tell my little girl I love her. I trust she's by and large great.
All things considered, we have lost a dreadful parcel of our colleagues, and to those of us who are left it appears to be only a supernatural occurrence that any of us came through alive. How I didn't get hit I don't have a clue, however I was one of the fortunate ones that got past it without a scratch, despite the fact that I got a few slug openings through my garments. Around two units of Canadians held around five fold the number of Germans. It would have benefited you to see the young men.
I didn't see one show the white plume, yet each had a set face and went directly at it. We held the Germans and charged them back until they began to utilize that terrible gas, and they constrained the French to our left side to withdraw. I have never experienced something like this, never need to encounter it again and won't ever discuss it again. So we needed to withdraw as well or we would have been cut right off. It was only a bad dream, a heck, withdrawing across the ground, with the Jack Johnsons burrowing incredible openings and the shrapnel pouring downward on us, and the projectiles striking all over. We could see the young men falling all over, and it was only horrendous to hear them shout out. Thank heavens the Artillery and English fortifications came up when they did and drove the Germans off.
Our best machine gun sergeant is to be suggested for the Victoria Cross, he sure is a daring man, and he is seriously injured. Our automatic rifle cleared out many Germans. Helpless James Frank of Cobourg. James is no more. I am upset for Mrs. Emily, yet Major Bolster kicked the bucket a fearless passing. He was the remainder of his company to leave the trench and he had a grin all over.
We have lost two of our weapons and there are just eleven of us avoided with regard to the part. Well all the young men did all that could be expected and I for one am prepared to do it once more, just I trust the war will end before long, for the helpless guardians, spouses and darlings of the multitude of troopers. Still I express gratitude toward God that I am saved and consistently ask that he will before long end the war.
Gracious mother! Goodness love, Be solid, Be daring, It is all working out in a good way! Most likely! Post even shown up the previous morning!
With Love,
Edward.
