Dear Jean, It is with deep regret and despair that I write this letter to you. We have lost the battle and the Japanese have now imprisoned us. I am now a prisoner of war along with all my friends and fellow soldiers. It is evident that the worst is yet to come. I am being treated with no respect but like a pig. I have to work all day until my bones get weak and my clothes get drowned in sweat. Life is no easy task and I feel like my body is just going to give up one day.
The suffering I have witnessed everyday is disgusting. You could call it hell for all we know. My love, I only wish that I could return to your arms one day but it seems unlikely. I will keep hoping for the best. Your husband, Albert
