I spoke with your mother at the grocer earlier this week and she told me that you have joined the Army and that you are now in Italy! I was Shocked to hear this. Why would you do such a thing? What reasons could you possibly have to travel half way across the world to fight in a war? She didn't tell me whether you were drafted of whether you enlisted, which was it? Any way, it doesn't matter now, the result is the same either way.
The papers say that the New Zealanders are in Italy at a place
called Monte Casino? I have never heard of the place. What is it like there? Is the fighting as tough as you would imagine?
We are so worried about you and you are in our prayers every night. We have made some fruitcake for you which we hopes get’s there in one piece. If there is anything else that we could send to you make your time at war happier tell us and we will do our best to send it. Please stay safe and return to us soon.
