A Letter to Heroes: Writing to Role Models

Role models have the power to shape our lives in profound ways. Whether they’re a historical figure, a public personality, or someone close to you, we tend to follow their example. So one way to express your thanks to them is with a letter to heroes. These can be your way of expressing your thanks to them and explaining all the ways they have inspired you. This can be a heartfelt message that shares some of the compassion and wisdom they showed you over the years.

1, Start with a Personal Introduction

When it comes to letters to heroes, the important thing is to start with an introduction. As a highly personalized letter, you want them to know who you are and to make it sound like a one-to-one conversation. So when introducing yourself, don’t make it sound like a generic letter you can find a million off, talk to them like you know them. Use your knowledge of them if they are more formal then write the letter like that or if they are more casual do that as well.

2, Share Examples of Their Influence

The main point of your letter to heroes should be detailing why this person is important to you and how their mentorship. Detail how their actions, words, or values have affected your life. You can also share stories like if you met them in a mentorship program or when you were still an intern to get a laugh out of them. You can share some important moments in their life, the lessons and wisdom they shared, and why they helped you become you.

3, Reflect on How They’ve Shaped Your Path

Aside from specific wisdom, the greatest joy a mentor or teacher can have is seeing their student now walking the right path. So spend some time showing that you are doing well and how you’ve managed to get that far. Give a short timeline of your life story that will show them where you are now. These will show you that not only did their advice help you, but it will bring you through the right path.

4, Express Gratitude in Your Letter to Heroes

So why not take the time and personally give some thanks to them for all the help they’ve given? Give that message straight from the heart and remind them that their efforts weren’t for nothing.

5, Close with Encouragement and Best Wishes

When it comes time to end your letter, be sure to end your letter to heroes on a positive note. After you’ve thanked them, you can also offer encouragement and give them your best wishes. You don’t even need to say goodbye here. The letter to your heroes can also be an opportunity to invite them to catch up and talk about some of the things you missed in greater detail.
