My dearest Charity,
I’ve spent many nights thinking about you and father. How is he during these long days? Him and I, as you know, left things on a rather bad note. I just pray things go well over here in Yorktown. Please tell him I miss him dearly.
My nights in the militia are long and cold. If I’m lucky I’ll be able to snatch a spoonful of stew a night. Elders before young is how it goes at supper time. We gather around a small fire to eat and talk about the days happenings. Last nights chatter was about a man named William who had been shot by a red coat. William, you see, was a great man. His poor wife Lucile is left with three children, all young too.
